If I may nitpick: I think you've missed a step there. A distribution
of forces in space requires a medium of distribution (or else a way,
as is the case with GR, to get around this). That medium is known as a
field, and now the mathematical definitions come into play to model
its properties. What fields really are may never be known, but their
existence as real entities can only be denied by appealing to
voodoo! :-)
