The Germans thought the same about Hitler when Hindenburg appointed
him as Chancellor in 1933, c.f. Alfred Hugenberg's infamous statement
about "boxing Hitler in." It didn't work then, and I'm doubtful it
would work now.
The "more rational Republicans" didn't do much tempering of Bush's
statist tendencies, or did I imagine that prescription drug benefit?
If anything, I expect the GOP would be a more effective opponent of
statist initiatives coming from a Democratic White House.
