That's just a mass media stereotype and I know of at least one dope
with a big mouth that breaks the Buddhist monk mold. :)
From what I've read about them, I deeply admire their peacefulness
and they appear to have a fantastic grip on being happy (I'm no slouch
myself : ), but their noble truths focus too much on avoiding pain
which in turn hobbles their ability to evolve further. It's great in
theory but when they get old, sick or are in pain.... they inevitably
depend on modern medicine to feel better. (e.g. even the Dalai Lama
himself wears glasses)

Epicurus had it right. 'the indulgence which prevents a greater
pleasure, or produces a greater pain, is to be avoided"
