I lived near there for a while, too. I noticed that there were a lot of
old stone walls in the forest. Local people told me that the area used
to be cleared and used for farming. The walls surrounded fields. But
the land was really not very good, and as settlement moved westward,
the farms were abandoned. The trees that now grow there date from the
abandonment, so they are all about the same age.
Maybe a bit of both.
