Nothing, unless you were black or female or propertyless or of the
wrong religion ..., except of course the republic we started with put
no effective limits on the states (that took the 14th amendment and a
century of jurisprudence).
Oh, we mustn't forget the high infant mortality, smallpox, the weeks
it took for communications between states, and a level of violence on
the frontier that makes our inner cities look like nirvana.

The "constitutional republic that we started with" had "unfettered"
democracy at the state level, at least for propertied Protestant white
males.
