Compared with the purchasing power of money, the price of gold now is
only about half of what it was in 1980, when it went over $800 per
ounce, in 1980 dollars.

Yes. Resources are more expensive now, but you can't ignore the drop in
the value of the dollar. Compared with every other major currency in
the world, the U.S. dollar is worth far less now than it was when Bush
came to power. In Euros, it has gone down from about E1.20 to E0.65. In
Canadian dollars, it has gone down from about $1.60 to $0.98. In
British pounds, it has gone down from about 95p to 50p. And so on and
so on. Those of us who buy resources in other currencies are finding we
have to pay more now than we used to, but nowhere near as much more as
Americans do.
